Topic: 30 Years of UV in HVAC : Bridging Bio-safety and Energy Efficiency

This presentation draws on 30 years of UV expertise to show the impacts of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) on indoor air quality (IAQ). It explains the prevalence of bioaerosols in buildings, the limitations of currently used IAQ solutions, and how UV systems could be the key component for improving building occupants health, with optimized energy costs and other beneficial effects on the HVAC system itself. In the context of bioaerosols and airborne disease transmission, this positions UVGI as a mature, cost-effective technology that supports IAQ standards, such as ASHRAE Standard 241, with proven benefits in commercial and healthcare buildings, enabling resilient, bio-safe, and energy-efficient building design.

Topic: A Novel CFD-Experimental Analysis for Enhancing Air Distribution and Indoor Air Quality in Existing Buildings Using High Induction Diffusers

Heating, cooling, and ventilation account for over 60% of energy use in Canadian buildings, yet many conventional air distribution systems result in poor air mixing and uneven temperatures. This presentation highlights how high-induction diffusers improve indoor air quality and thermal comfort while saving energy. Based on computer modeling and controlled testing, these diffusers are compared with traditional designs. Results demonstrate improved air mixing, reduced thermal stratification, and more effective delivery of fresh air to occupied zones. In existing buildings, enhanced ventilation effectiveness improves comfort without increasing airflow. In new designs, reduced outdoor air requirements help avoid oversized systems and lower operating costs. Overall, optimized air distribution strategies can achieve energy savings of up to 25%.

Topic: The missing link of decarbonization

This presentation will showcase the lesser understood cost of fully decarbonizing Quebec facilities. Up to 50% of annual heating costs in a commercial facility are a result of just a few hours per winter, which is due to peak power consumption.

This session will explain how properly applied Electric Thermal Storage Boilers eliminate this hidden cost, which results in substantial savings on an annual basis. Additional session content will include Hydro Quebec’s cash incentive for facilities implementing Electric Thermal Storage solutions; how Electric Thermal Storage Boilers are used for comfort heating, domestic water heating, amongst other ancillary heating loads; along with best-practices for optimizing a fully electrified commercial heating plant.
